About Compounding Prescriptions.

COMPOUNDING IS THE ART AND SCIENCE OF CREATING A PERSONALIZED MEDICATION.

We understand that everyone is different, thus meaning you may require different levels of hormones or chemicals than someone else. Our staff is fully trained to be able to compound your specialty medication that is tailored to your needs.

Here at Rx Express Pharmacy, we pride ourselves on a fast turn around time for compounding medications. Our pharmacists, Nick McMellon and Paul McMellon, have extensive training and experience making compounds. Generally, you can expect your compound to be completed in 24 hours or less.

HISTORY OF COMPOUNDING

Before the 1950s, nearly all prescriptions were compounded. With the advent of mass drug manufacturing in the 1950s/1960s, compounding rapidly declined. The pharmacist’s role as a preparer of medications quickly changed to that of a dispenser of manufactured dosage forms. Because of this, most pharmacists were no longer being trained to compound medications. However, the “one size fits all” nature of mass-manufactured medications meant that some patient’s needs weren’t being met.

IS COMPOUNDING SAFE?

Each compound is achieved through an essential triad of the patient, physician and pharmacist. This triad is regulated by state boards of pharmacy. The entire process begins with the physician first prescribing your medication (based on your individual requirements), then the pharmacist takes the necessary steps to measure each ingredient, compounds them, and dispenses the medicine to the patient after a thorough consultation. In return, this gives the patient the type of personalized care they deserve!

WHO CAN TAKE COMPOUNDED MEDICATIONS?

People and pets of all ages and sizes, male or female, can take compounded medications. Each compound is carefully crafted to contain the appropriate amounts of each ingredient to ensure its full and complete safety. Our pharmacy can create compounds in a multitude of dosage forms with the sky being the limit. Ask one of our staff members on your next visit about compounding. We’ll be glad to answer any of your questions or concerns.

HOW DOES COMPOUNDING BENEFIT ME?

Compounding benefits you by allowing our pharmacist the opportunity to create your medication without any ingredients that you may be allergic to. Also, compounding allows our pharmacist to create a dosage form that suits the patients needs. For example, if you can’t swallow a tablet, we’ll compound it into an oral liquid. This provides the pharmacist a chance to create your prescription tailored to your pharmaceutical needs. Finally, it provides you additional means of taking your medication to ensure patient compliance is maintained.

WHAT IS BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT?

Your body produces specific hormones to in order to stay balanced. From time to time, people go through hormone changes. These changes can cause your biological hormones to become out of sync with each other. Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy is the act in which our pharmacist (with your prescription) can create a unique compound of just the right amounts of hormones. No two people are alike, therefore each compound is uniquely made with your personal needs in mind. Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy works to help prevent:

  • Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Moodiness
  • Post-partum depression
  • Weight gain
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibrocystic breasts
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Hot flashes
  • Decreased libido
  • Painful sexual intercourse
  • Vaginal dryness

CAN YOU MAIL COMPOUNDS?

Yes, we are able to mail most compounded medications.

WILL MY INSURANCE COVER IT?

Great question! Most insurances will cover or pay for your compounded medication. Certain ingredients aren’t covered by some insurances which would require you to pay for these prescriptions out of pocket.

However, you can always submit the prescription/compound to your insurance for reimbursement. Some insurance plans refuse to pay directly to the pharmacy for the compounds and this requires the patient to submit a paper claim.
